Toaster Launcher Dev Diary - November 2024 - Space and the Holidays

This is going to be the last entry of 2024 as I will spend time enjoying my birthday and the remainder of the holiday season. Development will resume by January.

The Space level is now set up! In the previous entry, I have shown the background, but after some testing, the sizing felt off so I decided to redo it. Making it took a considerable amount of time because of how I wanted to portray it and how to make it look good. I wanted its atmosphere to radiate a cosmic feel rather than just the simple blankness and a bunch of dots. Also I do not want it to look flat compared to Sky.

Eventually, I discovered that I can use particles and parallax to create the background, and it turned out well.

In the case of the Story, the Space level is where the explosives came from, not from the edge of the Earth's atmosphere, but through a wormhole, which the explosives use to travel. Chester goes through and that is when the level starts.

In Space, besides the new explosives shown in the previous entry, the Player movement has become more difficult. After Sky allows flight, giving Chester the ability to move freely, Space adds the lack of friction (or to be more precise, removes friction), just like real space, meaning that Chester will end up drifting if moving in high speeds. This is considered a "downgrade" in movement compared to previous levels. However, I think it is necessary to introduce this for the sake of increased difficulty.

Here is a video showing how the movement of Space works, including its own music!

As mentioned before, because of the holiday season, development will resume on January.

Make sure you stay tuned for updates! 🍞💣
